Vintage Faja No.01

Vintage Faja No.01

Found while sifting through vintage piles in Central America’s largest textile market in Chichicastenango, Guatemala.  This indigo faja belt is part of traditional Mayan clothing, wrapping around a woman’s waist again and again. Handwoven on a backstrap loom using a meticulous, intricate weaving technique called “brocading” that has been passed down for generations.  The bird and flower design continues to the back and is secured on an ivory linen/cotton blended pillow cover.

This pillow helps sustain this craft and support ethical employment.
